Finance guru tips Tottenham to form 14-team alliance after ‘battleground’ talks

Tottenham must be part of a 14-team coalition if they want the Premier League to amend its rules on Covid-enforced cancellations.

So says finance expert Doctor Dan Plumley, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest developments in the Covid call-off saga.

The Daily Mail reported on Sunday (23 January) that clubs may soon have to show proof of four positive tests to have a game called off.

It is understood that the new measures have the backing of most top-flight clubs and could come into play after the winter break.

Spurs have been one of the worst affected clubs by the recent spate of Covid postponements.

Antonio Conte has called the current state of the cancellation-ravaged league a “big mess”, as quoted by The Guardian last Tuesday (18 January).

Plumley explained what Spurs need to do to ensure that the new regulations are ratified by the Premier League.

“We need to see some consensus,” the Sheffield Hallam University expert told Football Insider‘s Adam Williams.

“It’s easy enough to get something changed so long as you can get 14 clubs to agree to it.

“That’s always your battleground. This Covid stuff is a new policy but it still has to go through the clubs. That is the way it is governed.

“If you look at the rules in Germany, they make a distinction between sport-related injuries and Covid. They haven’t had any cancellations, I don’t think.

“The rules were never going to be perfect but Tottenham are right, there are better ways to frame the rules.”

Spurs signed off before the winter break with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea on Sunday (23 January).

Conte’s side are next in action against Brighton in the FA Cup next Saturday (5 February).
