‘Cristian Romero to leave Tottenham in £80m transfer’ – Shock reaction
Cristian Romero potentially leaving Tottenham this summer for a fee of £80million has caused disbelief ahead of the transfer window.
It has been a difficult season for Ange Postecoglou‘s side, which at times has not been helped by the injury-enforced absence of the Argentine World Cup winner.
The centre-back is now attracting interest before the market reopens at the end of the season, with Atletico Madrid linked with a move for Romero.
That has now led to a debate about just how much Spurs should charge if they are to sell the 26-year-old in the summer.

Jamie O’Hara makes Cristian Romero transfer demand
It has been suggested that Tottenham could accept a suitable offer for Romero if one comes in once the market reopens.
Jamie O’Hara though believes that such a bid will have to be a big one if it is to convince the North London club to part company with the centre-back.
Speaking on talkSPORT about Atletico’s reported interest in Romero, the former Spurs midfielder and ex-Chelsea man Jason Cundy suggested a move to the La Liga club would suit the Argentine.
That then led to O’Hara declaring that Diego Simeone’s side could have the Tottenham defender for £80million.

Tackles per Game | 1.9 |
Clearances per Game | 2.9 |
Duel Success Rate | 61% |

Cundy reacted to that claim with shock, asking if the ex-Spurs man meant £18million rather than £80million, before claiming Atletico would not spend that much on the 26-year-old.
In response to that, O’Hara stated: “I bet they do. I reckon he’d go for big money mate. He’s a big centre half, he’s won a World Cup, I’m telling you know he’ll go for big money.”
Cundy then claimed that he would offer £50million at most for the Tottenham star, before declaring he would walk away when O’Hara suggested £65million.
That then left the former Spurs man to simply state happily: “All right see you later, I’ll keep him, no problem.”
Tottenham in tricky situation over potential deal
Football Insider Verdict
As things stand Romero has just two years remaining on his current contract, securing his future in North London until the summer of 2027.
That means it is getting to the point where Spurs could feel pressure to sell if offers start to come in for the centre-back from elsewhere.
On his day there is no denying Romero can be an excellent defender for Tottenham, but he can also be a liability with his discipline.
While that rash nature may mean he would suit Atletico Madrid’s style under Simeone, it also means clubs will be wary about paying too much for a player who could cost them with moments of madness.
Combining those issues, and it could make it difficult for Spurs to get the £80million that O’Hara wants for the sale of the Argentine.
In that case, it will be intriguing to see exactly what price tag Tottenham themselves set for Romero, given they will be looking to bounce back from a dismal season come the summer and beyond.
