Tottenham are to hold showdown talks with Mauricio Pochettino this week as they prepare to offer him a jawdropping new contract worth £9million, according to a report.
The Daily Mail claim he is to meet chairman Daniel Levy to discuss summer transfer plans and top of the agenda will be a new deal for Argentine.
It is said that Levy preparing to offer a contract that will nearly double Pochettino’s current deal to £9million-a-year, equivalent to £173,000-a-week.
Football Insider verdict:
Pochettino has three years left on his current £5.5million-a-year deal but he is in a strong position to negotiate a massive pay rise. The Argentine is an intelligent man and knows his own value. Unusually in the world of elite football, he also operates without an agent and personally negotiates on behalf of himself and his backroom staff. Anyone who can secure a double-your-money deal with Levy has to be pretty smart, although the chairman does not hold all the aces on this occasion. Pochettino has just steered Tottenham to a third consecutive top-three finish and another campaign in the Champions League while operating on a shoestring budget in comparison to his rival Premier League managers. Spurs secured a £41million profit in their most recent financial results, and have made a net profit in the transfer market since Pochettino took over in the summer of 2014. It appears the Argentine is unwilling to extending the length of his tenure without being seriously backed by the money men, both in terms of holding on to the stars already at the club, and buying new ones. Who can blame him? He knows he could walk into one of Europe’s leading jobs were he to quit White Hart Lane. Levy will never cave in to all Pochettino’s demands, but he is astute enough to know he must offer a few lucrative carrots to keep the main man.
