‘Tottenham to open Bayern Munich talks on Mathys Tel discount as key factor emerges’

Mathys Tel is facing an uncertain future with Tottenham and Bayern Munich due for new talks in the summer transfer window.

There was a dramatic saga involving the young attacker back in the January transfer window which eventually ended with him making the move to North London.

Tel joined Tottenham on loan from Bayern Munich until the end of the season, despite initially turning down the move, and Spurs will have the option to buy the 19-year-old permanently in the summer.

While many will be interested to see if that option is taken up, it seems there is still much to be decided before confirmation on that is issued.

Mathys Tel deal could be rengotiated

It is expected that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will be sacked this summer, even if the club win the Europa League.

According to a report from The Times, that means Tel’s future is particularly uncertain given the impact the Spurs boss had in convincing him to make the move to the club.

However, the club are still keen to sign the attacker permanently, but do not want to pay the £47.5million they would need to in order to take up the option in his current loan deal.

As a result, Tottenham are planning to hold talks with Bayern about renegotiating terms in an attempt to reduce the price they must pay for the Frenchman.

Even so, it is also believed that the activation of that option will be influenced by whether or not Tel himself wants to stay at Spurs.

Qualification for the Champions League, which the club can achieve if they win the Europa League, could apparently have a big impact on that particular situation.

Football Insider Verdict

After a slow start, Tel has shown some signs of improvement in the Premier League, but he is yet to set the world on fire for Postecoglou‘s side.

There is likely to be a sense that the club may be able to secure other more suitable attacking options for next season who can make a more significant and immediate impact.

Beyond that, Tel has angered Tottenham fans at times this season, such as when taking a stoppage time penalty to deny Brennan Johnson a hat-trick against Southampton.

As a result, there are likely to be some supporters of the club who would not feel like this is a big loss, if his move is not made permanent.

That may be the case, especially if Spurs are unable to renegotiate a reduced price for Tel with Bayern, given they are not going to want to pay over the odds in such an important transfer window.

Tottenham are not expected to be blessed with major spending power this summer so committing a large chunk to Tel on the basis of moderate production would be a risk.

With all that in mind, it could be some time yet before there is clarification on the attacker’s future, as these various issues are addressed by the numerous parties involved.
