‘Tottenham to sign perfect Romero replacement’ – fans wowed by journalist’s update

Tottenham fans have urged the club to sign a new defender amid mounting speculation over Cristian Romero’s future.

Spurs endured a turbulent campaign last season but ended on a high by lifting the Europa League trophy and ending their 17-year trophy trophy drought.

Since then, the club have parted ways with Ange Postecoglou and appointed Thomas Frank, who has already begun reshaping the squad and backroom staff ahead of the new season.

But despite the changes, speculation around Romero’s future hasn’t gone away. Football Insider recently revealed that Atletico Madrid have held early talks over a deal to sign Romero ahead of a summer move.

Back in April, former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that both Atletico and Real Madrid are keen on Romero with Spurs open to selling for the right price.

It now appears that the club are exploring options in the transfer market, and with the uncertainty surrounding Romero’s future, Tottenham fans have taken to social media calling for the club to secure a defensive replacement.

Tottenham reopen talks to sign Burnley star Maxime Esteve

According to L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi, Tottenham have “resumed discussions” with Burnley over a move for centre-back Maxime Esteve,

Despite Spurs’ renewed interest, Football Insider revealed Burnley are determined to keep hold of Esteve and have placed a £50 million price tag on him to ward off potential suitors.

The Clarets, who finished second in the Championship, are in a strong negotiating position with the Frenchman under contract until June 2029.

The 23-year-old was ever-present in Burnley’s 2024–25 league campaign, starting all 46 matches and playing a pivotal role in their defensive solidity. The club conceded just 16 goals across the season – a remarkable record that has brought Esteve to the attention of top European clubs.

Bayern Munich are also interested in Esteve, with former Burnley boss Vincent Kompany keen to bring the defender to Germany. However, Burnley remain intent on keeping him at Turf Moor.

Football Insider revealed back in May that Romero is expected to leave Tottenham this summer, despite playing a key role in their Europa League triumph.

With speculation continuing around his future, Tottenham fans believe Esteve could be the ideal replacement.

Esteve’s standout season has put him firmly on Spurs’ radar, and fans appear to be on board with the potential transfer. Many supporters have taken to social media to share their thoughts on the Frenchman joining the club.

One fan commented: “Romero clearly out the door if this happens,” while another wrote: “He’s the perfect left centre-back signing, man.”
