Tottenham are set to table a new and improved bid for Lyon midfielder Tanguy Ndombele, Football Insider understands.
The Londoners have made the 22-year-old one of their priority summer signings after scouting him extensively over the last two seasons.
A source with knowledge of Tottenham’s recruitment has told Football Insider the club have had an opening offer worth around £40million rejected by Lyon.
They are set to return to the negotiating table with an improved bid for a player Mauricio Pochettino is convinced can significantly enhance a midfield that was diminished by Mousa Dembele’s January sale to China.
Spurs want to sign two midfielders this summer and believe Ndombele’s combination of grit, athleticism and guile is worth spending a club-record fee for.
However, there is rival interest in the six-times France international from elite European club, led by Juventus, and this means Tottenham will have to smash their transfer record to get him.
The club’s current record outlay is the £42million deal for Davinson Sanchez in the summer of 2017.
Ndombele joined Lyon permanently last summer after a successful season on loan from Amiens.
He made 49 appearances for Lyon last season and was integral to impressive Champions League displays against Manchester City, one of which was won and the other drawn.
