Tottenham told to re-sign Bale after 'surprising' reveal - pundit

Noel Whelan has backed Tottenham to re-sign Gareth Bale when the transfer window opens on 9 June.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Leeds United striker claimed the 31-year-old has done enough to earn another season at Spurs and even suggested he could fill the void left by the potentially departing Harry Kane.

Bale told Sky Sports on Sunday that he knows where he will be playing next season but added he will not offer more detail until after the Euros.

According to Sky, Real Madrid will listen to offers for the Welsh winger this summer as they pursue big-money moves for Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland.

Bale netted 16 times in 34 appearances across all competitions for Spurs in the 2020-21 campaign.

He scored 11 goals in the Premier League at an average of 1.07 goals-per-game – no player in the division averaged more.(BBC)

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Bale’s goal return last season, Whelan said: “Wow, I mean, the stats don’t lie but I’m surprised.

“Bale has that instinct and ability in front of goal. He can be the difference for them when he is firing on all cylinders.

“He has so much quality so if he does re-sign he needs to be playing week in, week out. That is the only way you will get the best out of him. You cannot sign a player like that and leave him on the bench. He needs to be allowed to shine.

“If Harry Kane leaves they are going to need big name players to step up and fill the void. Someone will need to take the responsibility on and Bale can do that.

“He has played at the very highest level in his career and won a hatful of trophies. I think he has shown that he is worthy of getting another contract. He can still do it, he proved that last season.”
