Tottenham told to scrap Chiesa deal & sign ‘marquee’ striker – expert

Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Tottenham should focus on signing a “marquee striker” instead of bringing Juventus star Federico Chiesa to the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Spurs need to go “above and beyond” to sign an out-and-out striker before the transfer deadline.

Tottenham have been widely linked with a potential move for Chiesa, 26, who is reportedly surplus to requirements at Juventus.

The 51-cap Italy international, who hit 10 goals last term, is out of contract in Turin in less than 12 months.

Spurs are in the hunt for a new striker for the 2024-25 campaign after losing club legend Harry Kane to Bayern Munich 12 months ago.

When asked if Chiesa would be the ideal signing for Postecoglou’s side, Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think so.

“Without a doubt, he’d be a good addition – but he’s not the level I think Spurs need to be after.

“They need an out-and-out, top-level striker who has the image and the flair.

“Chiesa is obviously a quality player, but Spurs need to go above and beyond and bring a marquee striker in.

“If they bring in minority investment, then that’s the area they should be focusing on for the future.”
