Tottenham transfer deadline day: Ange Postecoglou misses out on another target

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou has received another late transfer blow after an update on a deadline day target, reports The Guardian.

Spurs have been desperate to add to their squad in the January transfer window, after suffering from a season-derailing injury crisis.

Antonin Kinsky has been the only purchase the North London side have made this January, as internal frustrations grow at the lack of signings.

Tottenham have already missed out on signing Stefanos Tzimas to Premier League rivals, Brighton, and look set to miss out on another striker target.

Noah Okafor, AC Milan’s young Swiss striker, is reportedly joining Napoli [The Guardian], despite being linked with a late move to Tottenham this January.

Spurs have also seen a bid in the region of £70million rejected [BBC Sport] for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi, following injuries to Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven.

There may be a glimmer of hope for Spurs fans as Mathys Tel is now on his way to London to finalise a loan move [Sky Sports], having rejected the club earlier in the window.

Tottenham running out of time to make signings for injury-ridden squad

Football Insider Verdict

Postecoglou’s second season in charge of Spurs has not gone to plan, in large part due to the injury crisis that has decimated his squad.

Pundit Tam McManus, even called for the former Celtic manager to be put out of his misery, after an image of a full starting 11 of injured players for Tottenham was circulated online.

Despite sitting 14th in the table, having won only two out of their last 12 Premier League matches, the Australian seems safe from being sacked for now.

Chairman Daniel Levy is understood to hope that Postecoglou can find a way through the current poor form that Spurs are suffering from, two internal candidates have been identified to replace the Australian if all else fails.

Despite Levy’s hopes, there has been little effort in the transfer market to support Postecoglou, with no outfield signings being made so far.

Whilst there is little hope of Spurs achieving anything in the league this season, Spurs stand a good chance of making it to the Carabao Cup final, as they lead Liverpool 1-0 going into the second leg of their semi-final. Spurs are also through to the knockout stages of the Europa League and are also still in the FA Cup.

Having not won a trophy since their Carling Cup victory in 2008, it seems strange that there has not been the impetus to bolster the squad to support Postecoglou in cup competitions this season.

In other news, Spurs may be able to hijack a bid for one of France’s best young talents after a deal fell through for West Ham.
