Tottenham transfers: O’Rourke updates on two priority January signings

Tottenham will prioritise the signing of a new defensive midfielder and centre-back in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Spurs are expected to be busy in the upcoming transfer window and have compiled a shortlist of options.

Inter Milan star Davide Fratesi is one of the names on their list of targets as he is keen to move on in search of more regular first-team football.

The 25-year-old joined Inter from Sassuolo in July, but has started just seven games across all competitions so far this season and would welcome a shot at more game time.

Tottenham have also been planning to land a new central defender, with Ange Postecoglou having been keen to add depth to his defence since the summer window.

However, blows to both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven during the defeat to Chelsea have seen those plans accelerated ahead of next month’s transfer window.

Tottenham plot January swoop to complete two star signings

After the club failed to address a number of their long-term positional targets during the summer transfer window, Postecoglou’s side are expected to be busy in January.

A new centre-back has been on their list since the summer following the departures of Eric Dier and Joe Rodon, while Ben Davies has filled in when needed so far this season.

Now, with January rapidly approaching, they are set to step up their interest in a number of targets to add further depth to the position.

Tottenham’s inconsistency so far this season have seen them drop to 11th in the Premier League after one win in their last eight games, with January signings set to make or break their season.

Postecoglou is said to have retained the backing of Daniel Levy, who will now look to support the boss in the transfer market despite the side’s recent struggles.

They had also been linked with the signing of a new winger mid-way through the season, but that has now dropped down their list of priorities.

In other news, Tottenham are working on a deal to sign a “big-money” star.
