Tottenham urged by expert to insert ‘clever’ Japhet Tanganga clause as £20m exit mooted

Paul Robinson has urged Tottenham to insist on adding a “clever” buy-back clause in a potential deal with AC Milan for Japhet Tanganga.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one claimed the loan should include an option to buy for north of £20million as well.

Tanganga, 23, struggled for game time in the 2021-22 campaign, in part due to injury.

According to the Daily Mail‘s Simon Jones (24 July), AC Milan have held talks with Spurs over a loan deal for the versatile defender.

Spurs are said to be negotiating a buy-back clause in the eventuality Milan make the move permanent for a fee in the region of £17million.

When asked by Football Insider for his assessment of the latest, Robinson said: “Listen, the manager has to be trusted to do what he is doing with the squad.

“Players move on whether we like it or not. Spurs have to trust Conte on this one. They have to let him move out the players he sees fit.

“If he does not see Tanganga as part of his plans he should be allowed to leave but only if the deal is right for Spurs.

“I think £17million would be too light as a permanent option on a loan. If there is a buy-back option in there as well, it is more palatable. That would be a clever move.

“I think Tanganga should be going on loan with an option of £20million-plus and a – clause.

“You have to trust Conte on the player but when it comes to price, it is up to the club to get the best deal possible. I think £17million is light.”
