Winging it: Depay is not as good as he thinks, says Redknapp

Tottenham have reportedly joined Everton in the race to sign Memphis Depay from Manchester United – and Spurs fans have taken to Twitter to back the pursuit.

Depay has been frozen out at Old Trafford this season under manager Jose Mourinho and has played just 20 minutes of Premier League football.

It has been widely reported that United will allow the Holland winger, who joined from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2015 for around £25million, to go out on loan in the January window.

The Liverpool Echo now claim that Spurs will rival Everton for the signature of the 22-year-old, who has also attracted interest from Roma, Wolfsburg and Nice.

This comes after Tottenham and Everton went head-to-head for the signing of Moussa Sissoko from Newcastle in the final days of the summer window, a battle which was eventually won by the Londoners when they sealed a £30million deal in the final hours of deadline day.

The initial response from Spurs fans was that a pursuit of Depay made sense given the club’s absence of authentic wide men.

Here is a selection of their messages on Twitter:

Depay was a prolific scorer and creator at former club PSV with 50 goals and 29 assists from 124 matches, but he has failed to match that output at United.

A record of just seven goals and seven assists from 56 appearances has led many observers to label him as a flop.
