Tottenham work on signing midfielder in January – Sources
Tottenham are working on a deal to sign a new midfielder in the January transfer window, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Ange Postecoglou is keen to bolster the position after experimenting with Dejan Kulusevski in a more central role.
While the system involving Kulusevski and Maddison with a deeper midfielder behind them has been considered a success, there is a feeling they could upgrade in that area.
This comes amid interest in 26-year-old AC Milan star Tijjani Reijnders although sources say a January deal for the Dutchman is considered “highly unlikely”.
Should Spurs decide to up their interest in his signature, it will have to wait until the summer as he remains a crucial part of Paulo Fonseca’s side.
In the meantime, they are considering their options for the mid-season window as they look to improve their bid for Champions League football.
Tottenham step up midfielder interest ahead of January window
Postecoglou’s current options for the position include Pape Matar Sarr, Yves Bissouma and Rodrigo Bentancur behind Maddison and Kulusevski.
Meanwhile, young duo Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray are considered too inexperienced to step into the pressure of a starting midfield spot and have been used sparingly.
This has led the recruitment team in North London to consider potential incoming who would be capable of stepping in and immediately improving their side.
The manager has often experimented with his options in midfield, including wide-scale changes which saw them come back to win 4-1 against West Ham.
However, the inability to find a consistent and settled midfield three who can guarantee results in the Premier League has led to the possibility of another addition.
