Tottenham working on deal to sign ‘big-money’ star in January – Insider
Tottenham are working on a deal to sign a “top-class” centre-back in the January transfer window, according to the club’s former scout.
Mick Brown, who also worked as a chief scout for Man United and Blackburn and remains very well-connected within the game, exclusively told Football Insider that a “big-money” deal could be on the cards when the window opens.
This comes after Football Insider revealed on 10 December that Ange Postecoglou will be given funds to invest in his squad in the mid-season window.
A new centre-back has risen to the top of their list of priorities following injuries to both Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven, exposing the lack of depth in their squad.
Radu Dragusin remains the only recognised centre-back behind the starting two at Spurs, while Ben Davies has also played significant minutes in a makeshift role.
However, the Welshman has also suffered a thigh injury which may force Postecoglou to consider alternative options in the coming weeks.
Spurs failed to complete the signing of a new defender in the summer despite interest after having been weakened in the position by Eric Dier and Joe Rodon’s exits.
Tottenham plan ‘big-money’ move for new centre-back in January
Ahead of the January transfer window, Tottenham’s recruitment team has started working on lining up available options for the position.
Brown, who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after spending over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, insisted that the signing of a new centre-back could cost them “big money”.
“Tottenham’s biggest problem is their instability in defence,” he told Football Insider.
“After these injuries they’ve suffered, I’m told they’re already working on identifying players who they could sign in the transfer window.
“The problem is, there isn’t an excessive amount of available defenders mid-way through the season.
“Spurs want to sign a top-class defender who can step in and make a difference, but that will cost big money in January.

“They are prioritising the signing of a defender, though, because it needs sorting.
“On top of that, if they can sort out their issues at the back, it will help them to make the most of their attacking output going forward.”
