Tottenham’s chance of signing Scott McTominay now revealed after surprise transfer links

Tottenham have been linked with a shock move for Napoli’s Scott McTominay, and now their chance of signing him has been revealed.

Spurs were knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Newcastle United on Wednesday (October 29) after fielding a weakened team at St James’ Park.

Thomas Frank’s men can now focus on securing a spot in the Premier League’s top four and advancing as far as possible in the Champions League.

Tottenham’s 3-0 win over Everton on Sunday pushed them up to third in the table and five points behind leaders Arsenal.

But as the January transfer window edges closer, Frank is already looking at ways to improve his squad.

Tottenham’s links to Scott McTominay dismissed

Football Insider revealed on October 29 that Spurs have shown an interest in Jean-Philippe Mateta, seeing the towering Crystal Palace striker as a great fit for their system.

Reports have also indicated that Tottenham have placed former Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay on their radar, although those links have been dismissed.

As revealed by Calcio Napoli 24, the Scotsman’s entourage has denied any possible rumours of him returning to England.

“Scott loves the city, the club and the fans. He’s really happy here,” a source close to the Napoli midfielder said.

That shuts down any possibility of Spurs or another club signing the Ballon d’Or nominee, who has become an incredible player since moving to Italy.

Tottenham need a midfielder like McTominay

McTominay left Manchester United in 2024, and while it was an exit that saddened supporters, the 28-year-old has gone from strength to strength since making the switch.

As highlighted by FBref, McTominay ranks in the top 1% of midfielders across Europe for non-penalty goals per 90 and the top 2% for shots in the past year.

The Scotland international has also scored 17 goals in 47 appearances for Napoli, including four in 11 appearances this term.

That is the exact reason why Spurs have shown an interest in McTominay, as they’re crying out for someone who is a goal-scoring presence from midfield.

In the Premier League, Joao Palhinha and Pape Matar Sarr are the club’s top-scoring midfielders with just two goals, which highlights a clear issue for Frank that could have been addressed by the Napoli superstar.
