Tottenham’s Heung-min Son clause to be triggered – expert

Tottenham will ensure they can get a big fee for Heung-min Son by triggering an extension clause in his contract.

That is the view of former Tottenham and Rangers defender Alan Hutton, who was speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the 31-year-old, claiming it wouldn’t “make sense” to allow him to run down his contract.

Son’s deal runs until 2025 and Tottenham have the option to extend that contract by a further 12 months, but no decision has been made public.

The forward, who is now captain of Ange Postecoglou’s side, remains a key man for Spurs and scored 17 Premier League goals last term.

He has been with Tottenham since 2015 and has scored the fifth-most goals (162) in the club’s history.

Son has been widely linked with potential moves to Turkey and Saudi Arabia and admitted last summer (2023) that he rejected a transfer to the Middle East.

Tottenham to trigger Son clause imminently, says Hutton

Hutton claimed that triggering the clause would put Tottenham in a position to maximise his value if he were to be sold in future.

He told Football Insider: “I think the club has put the clause in his contract to safeguard them.

“They’ll go and take that option up. It’s happening, 100%. He’s huge for Spurs. That will give you two seasons – and if someone comes in for him in that time, you can get a fee that Tottenham feel he is valued at.

“I think he’s still got a lot to give, whether that’s in the striker position or from the left.

Tottenham

“We don’t know what Tottenham are going to do with the striker position. We’ve had the rumours linking them with Toney, and I don’t know how true that is. We need options.

“But Son is the captain, and to let him run down his contract – I don’t think it makes sense for anybody.”
