Tottenham’s Johnny Cardoso deal paves way for explosion – sources

Tottenham Hotspur’s deal to sign Johnny Cardoso from Real Betis is being seen as a game-changer, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that it will “help the brand” to get an American player to join the club.

Spurs have secured a priority option to sign Cardoso as part of their deal to sell Giovani Lo Celso, having first refusal on a £21million move for him next summer.

With the Premier League continuing to grow in popularity in America, this move is seen as a positive one from a marketing and revenue perspective.

Signing the American central midfielder will help grow Tottenham’s brand in the United States, which could be beneficial for the club in the long term.

However, there is still plenty of work to be done between the two clubs before any potential deal becomes official.

Tottenham will look to reap the rewards of growing in America

Top Premier League sides now regularly tour America as part of their pre-season, and the large crowds showcase there’s an interest in that.

Signing Cardoso will help Spurs grow their club name in that country, and that will help financially.

It is also seen as a beneficial signing from a squad improvement perspective, as Ange Postecoglou wants another midfielder after missing out on Conor Gallagher.

Spurs have negotiated a sell-on clause for Cardoso, therefore they will receive a percentage of the fee if he ends up moving to another club.

The midfielder made 19 appearances in all competitions last season for the Spanish outfit.
