Tottenham’s surprising Cristian Romero transfer stance revealed

Cristian Romero may push to leave Tottenham in the summer amid interest from Atletico Madrid, sources have told Football Insider.

Atletico have pursued the centre-back as a long-term target for several consecutive transfer windows, and Diego Simeone is sensing another opportunity to prise his countryman away from North London.

It may surprise many that Tottenham still have no interest in losing their captain despite his volatile nature, but player power could come into play as the 27-year-old seeks Champions League football.

Romero has been critical of Tottenham amid their recent injury crisis, and left fans disgusted after he was sent off less than half an hour into the defeat at Manchester United last weekend.

Cristian Romero frustrated with Tottenham progress

Former Spurs scout Mick Brown recently told Football Insider that Romero is causing issues at Tottenham after his critical social media post towards the club.

The Argentine was heavily linked with an exit throughout last summer, even after the Lilywhites ended their trophy drought by securing Europa League glory.

Romero eventually agreed to sign a new long-term deal in North London, but it hasn’t taken long for familiar issues to rear their head once again.

The defender is clearly frustrated at the lack of progress that has been made this term, with Thomas Frank’s side currently sitting just one place above their 16th-placed finish from last season.

Tottenham could still conceivably be dragged into the relegation battle, which would be catastrophic for a team that had hopes of qualifying for the Champions League in the early stages of the season.

Playing in Europe’s premier club competition is Romero’s goal at the moment, and he is now set to push to make that happen at the next possible opportunity.

Howard Webb to speak with Cristian Romero

Former FIFA referee Keith Hackett told Football Insider on Monday that Tottenham and Frank will discuss Romero’s indiscipline with him in the coming days, after his dismissal cost his team last time out.

The former Atalanta man has now received more red cards than any other player in the Premier League since he first joined Tottenham in January 2021.

Hackett was quick to emphasise that Frank must make it clear to his captain that there is “no excuse” for the lack of control that he is showing on the pitch, and even suggested that he could call upon PMGOL chief Howard Webb to stress his point even further.

The former official made it clear that Romero’s actions have now reached a point where they must be addressed by the Spurs hierarchy.
