Trevoh Chalobah, Ben Chilwell react to major Will Hughes news at Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have issued a significant update on the future of Will Hughes at Selhurst Park, prompting a response from some of his past and present teammates.

It is now almost four years since the midfielder made the move to the Eagles, having signed from Watford back in the summer of 2021.

Since then the 29-year-old has emerged as an important player for the club, with a string of consistently reliable and effective performances in the centre of the park.

That will have led to some concern around Palace about the fact that Hughes‘ contract with the club was due to expire at the end of this season, which would have allowed him to leave for free this summer.

Now though, that situation is no longer something for those at Selhurst Park to worry about following the latest updates.

Will Hughes extends Selhurst Park stay

On Tuesday (15 April), Palace announced that Hughes has put pen to paper on a new extended contract with the club.

The 29-year-old’s future with the Eagles is now secure until the end of the 2026/27 season, in what feels like a significant boost for Oliver Glasner‘s side.

Indeed a number of those who have played a part at Selhurst Park this season, seem to also think this is a smart move.

After the club posted on Instagram to confirm that Hughes has extended his contract, Ben Chilwell, who is currently on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea was among those to like the post.

Another who did the same was Trevoh Chalobah, who returned to Chelsea after a loan spell at Selhurst Park back in January.

Crystal Palace get major boost with new deal

Football Insider Verdict

It is understood that the likes of West Ham were taking an interest in Hughes earlier in the season amid his contract uncertainty at Selhurst Park.

As a result, it is a big boost for Crystal Palace that they have now secured his future, given the 29-year-old has impressed in recent months.

Hughes has performed admirably while stepping in amid injuries to the likes of Adam Wharton and Jefferson Lerma, and is now a genuine contender for a first choice spot in midfield.

It does therefore make a lot of sense to reward him and protect his value to the club by handing him a new contract.

Indeed, with Wharton attracting interest from the likes of Man City, Man United and Tottenham, keeping another midfielder in Hughes could become even more crucial for Crystal Palace this summer.
