Trevor Sinclair and Chris Sutton back Aston Villa attacker over Chelsea ace

By Harvey Byrne

Trevor Sinclair and Chris Sutton have both backed Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish to keep his place in the England Under-21s over Chelsea attacking midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek.

The 21-year-old Villa prospect gave a sensational display playing in the number 10 role for the young Lions team during Tuesday afternoon’s 5-0 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Grealish laid on three goals for his side, while also being picked as BT Sports’ man-of-the-match.

Following the youngster’s performance, both Sinclair and Sutton were asked who they would opt for between him and Loftus-Cheek for the future and both picked Grealish.

“On the strength of that, I would definitely say Jack,” said Sinclair during BT Sports‘ post match analysis of the game.

“For me he did everything there you want a number 10 to do and more and he only played for an hour, but what he gave in an hour was top drawer.”

Chris Sutton agreed saying: “Yeah I think Grealish has got the edge in the final third, I think he’s got more ability in terms of seeing a pass and that’s something extra special.”

Sinclair came back in stating: “It’s no coincidence he’s playing for Villa, whereas you look at what’s happening at Chelsea, Loftus-Cheek’s not getting many opportunities and for me that start’s to halt the development for players, if you aren’t playing week in week out.”

Grealish is usually played in a wing role at club level, but following his performance for the young England side and Aston Villa’s struggles, he may move into the number 10 role.

He has made 10 appearances for the Midlands side in the Championship scoring two goals and providing one assist with the club currently struggling in the league.

The young prospect is now part of the England national set-up, switching allegiances from the Repubic of Ireland, who he represented at Under-17, 18 and 21 level.
