Twitter post shows how Liverpool really feel about ‘selfish’ Shaqiri – pundit

Frank McAvennie claims Xherdan Shaqiri was never going to make it at Liverpool after his exit was confirmed by the club.

The former West Ham striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, reacted as the Switzerland international joined Lyon.

On 23 August, Liverpool announced via their Twitter account that Shaqiri had joined the French side after three years on Merseyside.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has reported the fee is roughly £10million.

Shaqiri, 29, never established himself as a regular starter at Liverpool following his move from Stoke in 2018.

Over 63 appearances he scored eight goals and chipped in with nine assists.

McAvennie insists Shaqiri was too selfish to make it in a Liverpool side containing Mo Salah and Sadio Mane.

“He was all over the place at Liverpool,” McAvennie told Football Insider correspondent Ben Wild.

“I knew it was never going to work, he’s too selfish. He was getting into good positions but not passing to Mane or Salah.

“That will never end well at Liverpool. He wanted to do it all on his own.

“Diogo Jota did the same when he came in but he’s learned to play with the other attackers.

“Liverpool have always been great individuals playing in a team, Shaqiri never did either really.

“That’s what it was like under Kenny Dalglish, he wouldn’t have stood for what Shaqiri was doing.

“He came in, it didn’t work and he’s gone to play somewhere, fair enough.

“It was a low-key exit which shows how the club felt.”

Shaqiri may be best remembered by Reds fans for his brace against Manchester United in 2018’s 3-1 win at Anfield.

The winger picked up Champions League and Premier League medals while at the club.
