Football Insider gazes into its crystal ball and predicts the Tottenham team for the opening day of the 2017/18 campaign.
Mauricio Pochettino will be aware that his starting eleven needs little change for the next campaign, but the wide attacking areas are in much need of an upgrade.
The Argentine boss brought in Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Moussa Sissoko in the previous summer for big money, but neither have been able to get a run of games in the Spurs team.
Erik Lamela before his injury was often used out wide, while Christian Eriksen and Son Heung-min have also occupied the wide areas, but none of the trio are consistent enough and the Dane should be axed for the next campaign.
It is expected that Pochettino will revert back to his favoured 4-2-3-1 formation for next season and therefore some top class additions are needed if they are to progress further in the Champions League.
The north London club have been linked with left-winger Andre Schurrle and attacking midfielder Isco, who can also play on the right in the past year and these are the two widemen Tottenham need to ensure they bring in, in the summer.
Madrid’s Isco has been a long-term target for Pochettino and the Spain international is set to enter the final year of his contract in the summer.
The 24-year-old has played regularly for Zinedine Zidane’s team with 22 appearances to his name in all competitions this season, but given the other midfield options he is far from one of the stars of the team.
The Tottenham side would certainly allow him to do so and he would be the perfect option for Pochettino’s front three, as he will also be able to interchange with star Dele Alli in the centre.
Meanwhile, the Mirror reported last summer that Spurs were planning a shock move for left-winger Schurrle while he was at Wolfsburg.
The 26-year-old eventually left for German giants Borussia Dortmund, but he has been used sparingly for Thomas Tuchel’s team this season with just nine appearances coming in the league.
With a Premier League World Cup medals among many to his name Schurrle is still a top quality player and with a run in a team such as Tottenham he could revitalise his career.
With the additions of these two top class players as well as keeping stars Hugo Lloris, Harry Kane and Alli in the summer, Tottenham would have a great chance of progressing further and maybe even going all the way to winning the Premier League title in 2018.
In other Tottenham transfer news, there has been a finale in Spurs’ forward talks.
