Tyler Young hits out at Darren Ferguson after shock Everton twist

Tyler Young has seemingly aimed a sly dig at Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson after failing to make it off the bench for the FA Cup tie with his father’s Everton side.

Young, 18, was denied the opportunity to play against his father Ashley Young, after Ferguson, 52, son of Sir Alex Ferguson decided against bringing him off the bench on Thursday (January 9).

His father later made his feelings known regarding the situation, taking to X, formally known as Twitter, to let fans know he was “gutted.”

Everton’s 2-0 with over Peterborough was the first game of the post-Sean Dyche era, with the English manager receiving his marching orders mere hours before kick-off.

Football Insider have since revealed (January 10) that Everton are now in talks with David Moyes is in talks with Everton over a sensational return after Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman took charge for the FA Third Round tie.

Beto opened the scoring just before the break, beating the offside trap, rounding the goalkeeper, and slotting home from a tight angle.

Iliman Ndiaye doubled Everton’s lead with a late penalty, securing progress for the Merseyside club, although both members of the Young family were denied a dream.

Tyler Young thankful for the memories despite failing to make if off the bench for Everton clash

Young recently made his first-team debut in the EFL Trophy in October 2024, coming off the bench in their 2-0 win over Stevenage.

The central midfielder’s other two appearances so far this season were for Peterborough’s Under-21s, starting both, and failing to provide a goal contribution in his 153 minutes of action.

Young took to Instagram after the defeat to Everton, sharing an image with his father, adding a caption that could be seen as a sarcastic dig towards Ferguson, saying: “Happy to make these memories with you old man.”

In his press conference after the game, Ferguson addressed the situation, saying: “One of their players had a bit of a pop at me, which is bang out of order, but I’ve got to do what’s best for out team and, at that point, it’s 1-0 and we’re trying to get a result.

“Quite honestly, I did put Tyler on the bench and I gave him every opportunity but I’ve got to do what’s best for the team. I am sure they will remember it.”
