Tyrone Mings shocks onlookers in Aston Villa v Club Brugge: ‘How? Unbelievable’

Aston Villa centre-back Tyrone Mings left the TNT Sports commentary stunned following a remarkable moment as his side faced Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Unai Emery‘s side travelled to Belgium on Tuesday night (4 March) for the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

That saw the England international return to the scene of an incident he will want to forget from earlier in the season.

When the two sides had met in Belgium in the league phase, Mings had given away a penalty against Aston Villa after inexplicably picking up the ball inside his own area.

That had gifted a 1-0 win to Club Brugge, but the 31-year-old would make up for that in the latest fixture between the two teams here.

It also meant Mings had been cheered by the home crowd when his name was read out in the stadium ahead of kick-off.

Tyrone Mings produces stunning goalline clearance

Aston Villa had taken the lead in this game thanks to an excellent volley from Leon Bailey, only for Maxim De Cuyper to level the score at 1-1 less than ten minutes later.

The scoreline remained that way for some time, and Mings would deny the home team the chance to take the lead in stunning fashion.

After a deep cross was sent to the back post, Hans Vanaken founds himself free just yards out to head the ball into the bottom far corner.

Somehow though, the ball would go out for a goalkick, leaving most baffled as to how Aston Villa had not gone behind.

Speaking on TNT Sports commentary though, Ally McCoist suggested that the outstretched leg of Mings on the goalline had turned the ball behind, declaring (7:11pm): “By the way I think that’s the save of the season from Tyrone Mings.”

Fellow commentator Darren Fletcher replied: “I think it is. I think it is.”

As new replays then confirmed the centre-back had indeed cleared the ball, McCoist exclaimed: “Ohhhh! That’s the save of the season! How does?! That’s unbelievable!”

Fletcher then noted: “I tell you what, he’s made amends for picking the ball up when they came here in the league phase and giving the away the penalty.”

McCoist meanwhile remained baffled by the fact Mings had managed to keep it out, concluding: “How does he keep it out of the goal?! You think his body shape has to knock it in the back of the net! Brilliant defending!”

Aston Villa benefit massively from Tyrone Mings intervention

Football Insider Verdict

Making a contribution as big as this will have meant a huge amount to Mings in the circumstances.

Having cost Aston Villa so badly the last time they had travelled to Club Brugge, the centre-back will have been determined to make amends for that incident.

By making a clearance such as this, the 31-year-old undoubtedly did that, preventing a certain goal to cancel out the one he gave away in the previous fixture.

That came with the score at 1-1, and with Aston Villa going onto win 3-1 thanks to an own goal and Marco Asensio penalty, that contribution from Mings became even more important.

As a result, Unai Emery’s side are now in an excellent position to progress to the quarter finals of the competitions.

That is likely to bring about a major and vital financial windfall for Aston Villa, so Mings ought to be feeling very good about himself following the conclusion of this game.
