Danny Mills has said that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino could have his eyes on the Real Madrid job after his comments over his role in north London.

The former England defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, says that Spanish giants’ poor pre-season under Zinedine Zidane could see Pochettino handed the opportunity to take charge at the Bernabeu sooner than expected.

The Argentine came out with a strongly worded statement about his position at Spurs, saying he is not in charge of transfers, with just a week to go before the Premier League season kicks off.

With Real Madrid having spent heavily in comparison to Tottenham this summer, Mills says that Pochettino’s comments could indicate he has eyes on a job he has been linked with in the past.

Mills told Football Insider: “I just wonder if this is off the back of Zidane not doing particularly well at Real Madrid, he’s under a lot of pressure because of all the players he’s brought in, Eden Hazard returning what appears to be a little overweight and all the rest of it.

“Pre-season results have been terrible and suddenly you’re (Pochettino) thinking: ‘Well if I’m not going to get any money, actually the Real Madrid job might come up a little bit sooner than I thought.’ There are lots of variables.”

Tottenham have brought in Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke this summer, the latter heading back on loan to Leeds for the upcoming season, after two transfer windows without a single new signing.

Pochettino has been repeatedly linked with the Real Madrid job in the past but it was former boss Zidane who replaced Santiago Solari at the Spanish heavyweights back in March.

In other Tottenham news, it can be REVEALED that one senior player has told the club he wants to quit for their Premier League rivals.
