‘Unforgivable’ – Tottenham fans rip into ‘absolute clown’ after what he did vs Man United

Tottenham fans are fuming with Cristian Romero after a poor tackle on Casemiro saw him given a straight red card in the early stages of their 2-0 loss to Man United.

Romero has been a key man for Tottenham over the last few seasons and was named their new club captain by Thomas Frank ahead of this term.

He has been unable to help lead Spurs to any clear improvements this season compared to the last, as they sat 14th in the Premier League ahead of Saturday’s trip to Old Trafford.

Romero hit out at Tottenham’s board in the days leading up to the game, as their lack of transfer business throughout the recent January window was questioned in a post on his Instagram account.

Spurs fans will have wanted an on-pitch response from their captain in the wake of the comments, but he instead let himself and his teammates down by getting sent off early on.

Romero was sent off for a rash tackle on Casemiro

Spurs looked confident in the opening stages of the Old Trafford clash, as Conor Gallagher tested Senne Lammens in the 12th minute, while Pape Sarr and Joao Palhinha also went close with long-range strikes.

Any momentum they were able to build up was completely decimated by Romero’s moment of madness in the 29th minute as he followed through in a tackle with his studs up on Casemiro and was shown red by Michael Oliver.

Replays showed that the World Cup winner was deservedly given his marching orders, with his fourth Premier League red card for the club equalling Younes Kaboul’s dismissal record.

Tottenham were beaten 2-0 by United as Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes notched in each half to seal the win for the hosts.

Romero will now miss the next four Spurs games against Newcastle, Arsenal, Fulham and Crystal Palace following his second sending off of the campaign.

Spurs fans fume at Romero for more ill discipline – ‘Get him gone’

Rumours around a possible Spurs departure for Romero last summer were ended as he signed a new four-year contract, but this latest gaffe could spell the end of his time at the club soon.

Romero has been linked with Atletico Madrid in recent weeks, and many Tottenham fans would surely be content to see him moved on this summer.

Taking to X after his red card, one fan said: “As much as we agree with Romero being upset around injuries and lack of investment in the squad, the fans will not continue to accept the captain getting sent off or suspended multiple times a season. (Four) games without Romero now in the biggest period of our season. Unforgivable.”

Another added: “What an absolute clown Romero is there. We’re doing well at OT and he goes in recklessly like that. Moronic decision from the captain, especially after his comments last weekend.”

While one supporter simply said: “Absolutely sick of Romero, get him gone.”
