'Really unfortunate' - Murty details why Rangers 25-year-old is not in starting XI

Rangers manager Graeme Murty has admitted that Jason Holt has been “really unfortunate” to miss out on a starting place in recent weeks – but insists the 25-year-old is a “fantastic” player to have around the squad.

Holt, 25, lost his place to Greg Docherty after being forced to sit out the recent Scottish Premiership clash with Hamilton and has been unable to force his way back into the starting XI.

The midfielder came off the bench to replace Sean Goss in the second-half of Sunday’s Scottish Cup win over Falkirk and Murty believes it is a mark of the quality of his squad to have good players fighting to get into the starting XI.

“Jason Holt is a guy who is always ready to go. He has got a fantastic character. He is a fantastic person to have in the squad,” Murty said, as quoted by The Herald.

“He is really unfortunate actually to miss out on starting, but those are the decisions you have to make as a manager and I believe that having good players vying for each position is a mark of where we are trying to get to as a squad.”

Holt has made 26 appearances appearances for the Gers this season and has been an important part of the side under Murty after struggling for game-time in the opening part of the season prior to Pedro Caixinha’s sacking in October.

The former Hearts midfielder joined the Gers from Hearts in 2015 and played 108 times for the Ibrox giants.

Football Insider verdict:

Holt probably can feel a little hard done by after going from stand-in captain to substitute almost overnight but the form of Greg Docherty and Sean Goss has been too good for either to come out of the side to make way for him. The 25-year-old will likely find himself on the bench for Sunday’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox and could find it even harder to get into the side before long with Graham Dorrans nearing a return from the injury he picked up in October’s draw with Kilmarnock at Ibrox. With a lot of football before the end of the season, Holt will surely get his chance to come back into the starting XI.
