Celtic may be only a few hours away from clinching another league title, but for the moment that won’t be on the forefront on fans’ minds, and the future of Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers will.
Hoops majority shareholder cast doubt on Rodgers’ future at the club with a bizarrely timed interview with Sky Sports, in which he claimed that the Hoops wouldn’t stand in Rodgers’ way if another club approached him in the summer.
Desmond’s comments, coming in the wake of Arsene Wenger’s decision to step down as Arsenal boss, have made fans uneasy at what should be a time of celebration for fans, as the Bhoys stand on the brink of a second consecutive domestic treble.
One thing which could decide Rodgers’ future, and be a key factor in his plans going forward, will be the Hoops’ upcoming transfer budget for the close season.
Rodgers deserves to be allowed to spend big money, as he has worked miracles in his time with the Bhoys, picking them up off the floor after the failure of the Ronny Deila era.
A man who has won every domestic trophy he has competed in – so far – deserves the chance to mould a team that has the chance to compete in the Champions League group stages, and not merely be cannon fodder.
If the Hoops give Rodgers the money he wants, then the Bhoys shouldn’t worry about the Northern Irishman leaving.
However, if he indicates that he isn’t happy with the budget, there may well be trouble ahead.
