Van Bronckhorst tipped to push Rangers board for Arfield deal after Sky update – pundit
Alex McLeish has tipped Giovanni van Bronckhorst to tell the Rangers board to tie Scott Arfield down to a new contract.
The former Gers boss, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 33-year-old is exactly the sort of player the Dutch manager will want to keep around.
Speaking to Sky Sports last Sunday (12 December), Arfield admitted he himself is yet to hold talks with the club over a new deal, with his current terms expiring next summer.
However, he did state his “representatives” would be in discussions with the Gers.
Arfield has been a regular in the side since Van Bronckhorst’s appointment.
As such, McLeish suggested the manager would be demanding the Canada international is tied down.
“I do see a renaissance in Scott in that Giovanni trusts him,” McLeish told Football Insider’s Russell Edge.
“Let’s be honest, he’s a very trustworthy player, but it seems that Giovanni sees something in Scott that is important to the team.
“He’s a grafter, he’ll go forward, he’ll check back, he’ll cover people. He does a lot of the things that we deem ugly.
“He’s also got a knack of getting forward and getting into good posisitons from deep positions.
“I think Scott Arfield is a player who the whole team really appreciate. I believe he’ll (Van Bronckhorst) definitely try and nail him down and keep a guy like that in the squad.”

Arfield has featured in every game for Rangers since Van Bronckhorst took charge.
He has a total of 22 appearances and three goals under his belt this season.
