Speaking to Tottenham’s official website, former fan favourite van der Vaart claimed you “feel those weeks even more” when going up against Arsenal.
Van der Vaart, who currently plays for Danish side FC Midtjylland, also claimed that midfielder Dele Alli must be given time to fulfil his potential because he can become a “true great”.
“You feel those weeks even more. It’s what the game is all about. It is for the fans, for their history with the club, for their pride, for their future. You do it for them,” van der Vaart said.
“He [Dele Alli] is still so young and already so eager, I like that a lot. He’s fast, fluid and has a great skillset. I hope everyone will give him his time to develop to his full potential.
“He may become a true great.”
Spurs will be looking to go one better against rivals Arsenal on Sunday, after drawing against the Gunners 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium thanks to a Harry Kane penalty.
With six games left to go in the Premier League, Pochettino’s side remain four points behind leaders Chelsea who go up against Southampton on Tuesday night before Spurs face Palace.
