Van Nistelrooy could land Burnley manager’s job after Man United talks – sources
Ruud van Nistelrooy is still in the frame to take the vacant Burnley manager’s position despite talks with Manchester United about joining their coaching staff, sources have told Football Insider.
Man United legend Van Nistelrooy, 47, has been interviewed by Burnley since the departure of Vincent Kompany to Bayern Munich.
Football Insider [15 June] understands Frank Lampard and Carlos Corberan are among those to also have been interviewed, as Burnley seek an immediate return to the Premier League.
Van Nistelrooy has recently been engaged in talks about a high-profile return to Old Trafford, where he would work as part of Erik ten Hag’s backroom team.
It is a believed the attraction of returning to a management role may appeal more to the Dutchman.
The former United striker’s last role in management was with PSV Eindhoven, where he won the KNVB Cup before departing in 2023.
Van Nistelrooy in talks with Man United and Burnley
Burnley have made no secret of the fact Van Nistelrooy is still in the frame to take the top job at Turf Moor, despite the obvious temptation of a Red Devils return.
Having already managed and been successful with PSV in his homeland, it is unlikely Van Nistelrooy would revert back to a background role at any other club, but the former hero’s history at Man United does change the picture.
Football Insider revealed [2 June] that Burnley received a sum north of £10m in compensation for Kompany from Bayern, allowing the club more financial freedom despite recent relegation.

This could go some way to persuading Van Nistelrooy to take the job should he be offered it, with a lucrative salary package expected on the table.
Van Nistelrooy accumulated an impressive win rate of 64.7% whilst in Eindhoven, as his managerial stock began to steadily rise before his departure last year.
In other news, progress is expected in the pursuit of Burnley ‘keeper James Trafford by Newcastle United.
