Vertonghen makes massive claim about Tottenham ahead of cup clash v Manchester United
Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen has said that he is currently playing in the best Spurs squad he has been involved with since his arrival at the club.
The Belgian centre back arrived in north London back in 2012 and has established himself as one of the most important characters both on and off the pitch, acting as the second vice captain alongside Harry Kane and behind Hugo Lloris.
With three appearances until his 250th outing for the club, he has been involved in two consecutive title races in the Premier League, finishing third and second respectively, as well as a FA Cup semi final appearance last season – a feat he will repeat on Saturday against Manchester United.
However, despite being some way off newly-crowned champions Manchester City, and sitting fourth in the top flight table, Vertonghen has made the massive claim that the current squad are as good as he has seen at the club, and believes they can be the ones to break the decade-long absence of silverware.
He told Ham and High: “We’re full of confidence that we can (win a trophy).
“Everyone at the club is looking forward to games like this and being in finals. I’ve been here a long time and this is definitely the best team I’ve played in at Tottenham.

“This team and club deserves a trophy for all the work we’ve put in, and we hope Saturday can be the next step.”
Football Insider verdict
Is this really the very best Tottenham side Vertonghen has been involved in? While their European performances certainly suggest so, having gone from dropping into the Europa League to beating reigning champions Real Madrid on the way to an unbeaten group stage, domestically they are behind their rivals once again. Serge Aurier is not up to the level that Kyle Walker was when he left last summer, but other than that they have stayed the same or improved, with Davinson Sanchez having caught the eye at the back. Still, teams are judged on success, and if this squad can secure the FA Cup this season then there can be few arguments over the matter.
