Noel Whelan claims that the West Brom squad will be disappointed in the performances of summer signing Charlie Austin after his lack of goals this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker and Championship expert says that the former QPR and Southampton man has been a real let down for the Baggies this season with his record in front of goal.

Austin has managed to score just once in his nine Championship appearances since arriving at the Hawthorns, while he also has a goal under his belt in the League Cup for Slaven Bilic’s side.

Having been a big-name arrival for the Baggies over the summer, Whelan says that everyone at the Hawthorns, including his fellow teammates, will be disappointed with how he has failed to net on a regular basis.

Whelan told Football Insider: “I think you’re signing a marquee player and he’s not delivered. Charlie, I don’t know what the reason is, why he’s not firing and why he’s not scoring more goals.

“It’s very strange when I look at how West Brom play, they’re such an exciting and creative side going forward, you’d think you’d get chances week in, week out. As a striker you’d love those opportunities and those players who can get down the wings and balls in the box – he can score goals whether it’s on the deck or in the air.

“I think he’ll have expected more from himself and I think the players and the fans will have expected a lot more from that sort of player as well.”

Austin has a total of 138 Championship appearances and 67 second-tier goals under his belt, having played for the likes of Burnley and QPR before his move to the Hawthorns.

West Brom’s top scorers in the league have been Grady Diangana and Matheus Pereira, Austin’s fellow striker Kenneth Zohore with just two strikes to his name.

In other West Brom news, Paul Robinson has been left astounded by one Baggies star this season.
