Viktor Gyokeres in deep trouble after what happened in Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Viktor Gyokeres has still given Mikel Arteta reason for concern despite Arsenal’s thrashing of Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium.

Villa had emerged as one of the outside title contenders, having gone on an 11-game winning streak, but Unai Emery‘s side were completely undone on Tuesday, 30 December.

Before Man City take on Sunderland, the Gunners have now moved five points clear at the top of the table with their 4-1 win, with many Premier League fans blaming Ollie Watkins for the result.

The England international missed multiple chances to put his side ahead before a handful of second-half goals from the home side, but Arsenal fans were far more concerned about Gyokeres.

With four goals scored at home, many would have expected the £55million signing to score at least one of those, but as he was hooked after 77 minutes, there was a feeling of disappointment in the air.

The 27-year-old had just 16 touches in that time, unable to get a single shot on target, completing just three passes, creating zero chances, as well as zero dribbles.

The disappointment did not last long, though. Gabriel Jesus, who has recently returned from injury, needed just 55 seconds as his replacement to hit the back of the net.

There was absolute pandemonium in the stands, but it was clear just how much the goal meant to all of his teammates, who had been waiting for the Brazilian to return to full fitness since January.

Jesus has just six appearances to his name this season, but with 26 goals across his first three seasons with the Gunners, Gyokeres might have to start checking over his shoulder now.

The 28-year-old showed more determination in his 15 minutes on the pitch than Arsenal‘s star signing did for the other 75 minutes, and that should be a worrying sign for Arteta.

If he is to lead the Gunners to their first Premier League title since 2004, he needs to be getting the best out of these players, and he is clearly not able to do that with Gyokeres yet.
