Viktor Gyokeres: New twist in Arsenal bid to sign ‘top target’ – sources
Arsenal could be priced out of a move for striker target Viktor Gyokeres this summer, sources have told Football Insider.
The Gunners are desperate to bring a new forward to the club in the off-season after narrowly missing out on the Premier League title in the 2023-24 campaign.
Gyokeres – who lit up Portugal with Sporting CP this term – had been the “top target”, sources say, but there are now questions over how Arsenal will fund the deal.
It is believed Sporting will hold out for the Sweden international’s full £86million release clause in the off-season.
A well-placed source has told Football Insider that money will be made available to Mikel Arteta in the transfer market this summer, but Arsenal will not have unlimited funds after heavy spending last year (2023).
Arsenal could be priced out of £86m Gyokeres move
Gyokeres is one of the most highly-coveted strikers in Europe after his scintillating form for Portuguese champions Sporting.
The former Coventry star hit 43 goals in 49 games across all competitions in the 2023-24 campaign and also contributed 15 assists.
He is under contract in Lisbon until June 2028.
Arsenal are chasing a new striker with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah struggling for form and failing to hold down a regular spot in Arteta’s starting lineup.

Kai Havertz, who joined the club from Chelsea last summer (2023), also led the line for the Gunners during their unsuccessful title challenge.
Bukayo Saka was the club’s top scorer with 20 goals in the 2023-24 season, while Leandro Trossard and Havertz contributed 17 and 14 strikes respectively.
