‘Viktor Gyokeres will travel to Manchester tomorrow’ – Arsenal fans explode

Viktor Gyokeres’ future remains a point of contention for both Arsenal and Manchester United as the transfer window re-opens.

Sporting CP are resigned to losing their free-scoring striker this summer after his 97 goals across 102 appearances in all competitions in the last two seasons, which have fired them to back-to-back titles.

Gyokeres has been heavily linked with a return to the Premier League with several clubs on the hunt for a world-class number nine, but Arsenal and Man United have emerged as his two most likely destinations.

Football Insider revealed on 13 June that United boss Ruben Amorim has made Gyokeres his “number one target” after their success with Sporting, but the Red Devils may struggle to complete the transfer.

However, Football Insider reported last month that Gyokeres is “happy” to sign for Arsenal if they can complete a deal with Sporting this summer, and new developments suggest this deal could gather pace.

Gyokeres opts for Arsenal move ahead of Man United switch

Although Arsenal are yet to decide whether to push through with big-money offers for Gyokeres or RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, the Swede has made his intentions clear over where he’d prefer to head.

The Guardian reported on 14 June that Gyokeres has identified Arsenal as his preferred destination over Man United this summer, and this has emerged as a bitter blow to Amorim and United’s transfer plans.

Arsenal have been urged to break the bank in an effort to buy Gyokeres ahead of Sesko alongside other reinforcements out wide and in midfield, but the path is now clear for the Gunners to sign the 27-year-old.

Arsenal fans delighted at Man United setback – ‘failed institution’

Amorim had been hopeful that a deal to reunite Gyokeres with his former manager could be done this summer, but United’s 15th-placed finish and lack of European football will certainly hinder that prospect.

Mikel Arteta, meanwhile, will see Gyokeres as arguably the final piece of a Gunners jigsaw capable of winning the Premier League title, and Arsenal fans have expressed similar feelings on social media.

“If you’re big, you’re big”, was the message from one supporter, while others rubbed salt into the Red Devils’ wounds by listing other players who will reject a switch to the “failed institution” at Old Trafford.
