Virgil van Dijk cited as new Celtic deal agreed – ‘it is big’, says expert
Frank McAvennie has claimed Ange Postecoglou is looking at new players for Celtic “every month”.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops striker said although Postecoglou won’t be involved in scouting players, he is “very set in his ways” over the kind of players he wants.
As relayed by footballscotland (27 March), the Celts have appointed former Southampton scout Kevin Hamill.
Hamill was in charge of covering the Scottish football market for the Saints and was vital in the transfers of the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Victor Waynama and Fraser Forster to the Premier League.
Current Rangers man Steven Davis also arrived at St Mary’s during Hamill’s tenure and he was key in brining Artur Boruc back in 2012.
But McAvennie claimed securing Van Dijk for the English top flight was not as impressive as it seemed.
“It was a certainty Van Dijk was going to move, I would not take too much credit for that,” he told Football Insider.
“Everybody knew that Van Dijk was going to make it big in England. There is a wee connection there between Southampton and Celtic.
“I think Ange is very set in his ways, I do not think he will get involved in all the scouting. It is a big process.
“Every month I would think there would be players put in front of him.“

The Hoops have already strengthened their squad this season with the arrivals of Alistair Johnston and Yuki Kobayashi in January.
South Korean striker Hyeongyu Oh and Tomoki Iwata also arrived at Parkhead in the winter window.
