Vitor Pereira contract reaches top of the agenda at Wolves amid concern at past mistakes

Vitor Pereira’s contract is soon to be dealt with but will also be handled with caution due to Wolves’ previous managerial mistakes.

It has been an extremely underwhelming start to the season for the Wanderers after three defeats from three in the league.

The poor start was briefly salvaged after a 3-2 comeback against West Ham in the league cup where captain Jarrod Bowen confronted West Ham fans due to frustration with his team’s performance.

Crucially, Wolves held on to Newcastle target Jorgen Strand Larsen and, with the transfer window now shut, the club can solely focus on the team including the future of Pereira at Molineux.

Vitor Pereira contract to be addressed but Wolves board won’t rush

According to a report by The Daily Mail (2 September), the Portuguese’s contract situation will now be discussed after the culmination of the transfer window.

This is a particularly prudent conversation that needs to happen given the former Fenerbahce boss’s current deal expires at the end of the season.

However, the Midlands club are keeping in mind the mistakes of the past such as handing previous manager Gary O’Neil a four-year deal just prior to the start of the 2024-25 campaign.

Heavy spending under both the Englishman and Julen Lopetegui, compounded by poor starts, are also problematic mistakes the board want to avoid repeating.

The fact that the Pereira has started poorly will worry the Wolves hierarchy, hence why they may be a bit more cautious than normal before agreeing to a new contract with the manager.

Vitor Pereira’s 2024-25 turnaround cannot be forgotten as Wolves trust in him

Football Insider verdict

Outside of the managers at the top of the table, in my eyes, Pereira was the coach of last season after commanding a miraculous turnaround in form at Molineux.

The Wanderers had just nine points from 16 games before the Portuguese took over and salvaged them from relegation.

Mixing structured defending and fast counter-attacks the ex-Flamengo boss instilled renewed confidence at Wolves amongst the players and fans.

He was also known to enjoy a celebratory drink at the local Wetherspoon’s, highlighting his love for the city and its people.

After three defeats, two against high-flying Man City and Bournemouth and one against a jubilant Everton crowd, it is unfair to write off the Old Gold so quickly.

The season is a long one and I have faith that Pereira will be able to quickly turn things around in Wolverhampton.
