‘Vitor Pereira to axe Matheus Cunha until £63m Wolves exit after comments’

Matheus Cunha should have played his final game in a Wolves shirt amid speculation around his future, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

The former Aston Villa striker has suggested manager Vitor Pereira could drop the striker for the remainder of the campaign after his comments about a move elsewhere.

This season the Brazilian’s goals have made an important contribution to all but certainly keeping the club in the Premier League for the following year.

Even so, Agbonlahor does not believe Pereira will want to continue to play the Wolves striker given other issues that have emerged in recent months.

Matheus Cunha eyeing transfer exit

In the wake of his excellent form this season, the likes of Arsenal, Nottingham Forest and Man United have been linked with Cunha in recent months.

The striker only signed a new contract at Molineux earlier this year, with his new Wolves contract including a release clause of £62.5million to enhance expectations of a sale.

Indeed, Cunha has angered Wolves fans recently with his comments that have made it clear he wants to move on in the summer to a club where he can regularly win trophies.

Agbonlahor believes that attitude from the striker will lead to Pereira leaving him out of the side for the final games of the season, after enjoying an excellent run while Cunha has been out through suspension.

While speaking about the Wolves talisman on talkSPORT, the former England international: “If I was the manager now I wouldn’t play him for the rest of the season or so. [They’re] going to get £63million.

“I wouldn’t, I would play the players that have got Wolves out of this relegation battle. I would. He came on in the last game and scored.

“But I’ve seen it from Wolves fans online as well, on social media saying the same thing, like the comments he’s been coming out with.

“Isn’t he arguing in fans forums? Just shut up, you’ll get your move in the summer, let’s play football, it’s really simple now isn’t it.”

Vitor Pereira does not needs to use Wolves ace

Football Insider Verdict

Following their run of four straight wins, Wolves are now 14 points clear of the Premier League’s bottom three with just six games of the season remaining.

As a result they are now almost guaranteed to be safe from relegation for another year, allowing them to plan for the 2025/26 campaign.

So with that threat gone, there is no need for them to play Cunha as one of their best players in order to make sure they get the results they need to stay safe, given they have already been secured.

Indeed, considering most of those results have been picked up without the Brazilian in recent weeks, he may find it hard to force his way back into the Wolves starting XI anyway.

It is also worth noting that given he looks likely to leave in the summer, this would be an opportunity for the club to get used to playing without him for next season.

With that in mind, it may arguably not be a huge surprise if Cunha is not seen much in a Wolves shirt in the final weeks of the campaign.
