Vlachodimos: Borson suggests real reason Newcastle agreed shock five-year deal
Newcastle United have likely handed Odysseas Vlachodimos a five-year contract so they can amortise his transfer fee over a longer period of time.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider there are “red flags” surrounding the deal after the Greece international joined the north-east giants from Nottingham Forest earlier in the summer.
Newcastle are understood to have paid £20million to sign the 30-year-old goalkeeper hours before the 2023/24 accounting deadline on 30 June, while midfielder Elliot Anderson moved to the City Ground for £35million that very same day.
Both Premier League sides were close to the profit and sustainability (PSR) limit last season, with a breach likely carrying the penalty of a points deduction.
The Athletic reported on 13 September Newcastle are believed to have handed Vlachodimos a five-year deal following his arrival at St James’ Park.
Newcastle deal for Odysseas Vlachodimos could be investigated
Borson revealed the Premier League could investigate the transfer due to the high fee involved.
“It is a very odd deal,” Borson told Football Insider.
“I don’t think it’s completely certain that the Premier League won’t investigate that deal in quite some detail just because there are a number of red flags around it.
“You only need to read that Athletic piece to see the red flags.
“I assume the five-year deal is purely so they can amortise his fee of £20million over the full five years, so it’s £4million a year and, therefore, it’s not a massive amount of money.

“You would prefer to do that deal over maybe three years, but then you would increase the amortisation to nearly £7million.
“You can see why maybe they don’t want to do that.”
