Lee Wallace has claimed a strong end of Rangers’ pre-season campaign has transformed the mood in the camp ahead of the start of the team’s league campaign.
Morale was a rock-bottom at Ibrox after the club sunk to a humiliating Europa League opening-round defeat at the hands of Luxembourg minnows Progres Niederkorn at the start of last month.
But skipper Wallace believes that consecutive friendly wins over Watford and Sheffield Wednesday, plus a draw against Marseille, have boosted confidence.
“We suffered a humiliation in the European campaign, but it was about how we responded to that and, more so in the last 10 days, there’s definitely been a bit more positivity generated amongst the players and a bit more belief,” Wallace said, as quoted by the BBC Sport website.
“We are still learning about each other and gelling as a team, but there has certainly been a better end to the pre-season than we started and we are all raring to go next Sunday.”
Pedro Caixinha’s side begin their Scottish Premiership campaign with a trip to face Motherwell on Sunday, a match in which a 22-year-old new signing is in line to make his debut.
Football Insider sources have learned that defender Ellis Plummer, whop left Manchester City a month ago, is in talks to complete a transfer before the Fir Park clash.
Expectations are low given that Rangers finished 39 points behind treble winners Celtic last season but Wallance said his team will again target winning the Scottish title while respecting the gulf with their bitter rivals.
“Our mindset won’t change as Rangers players and that’s to win every single game – and win every competition that we enter,” said captain Wallace to the BBC.
“Obviously we take last season into consideration. We are well aware of the task and we are well aware of how far off it we were.
“Irrespective of signings, irrespective of the cost, that has to be the aim for us. We can’t settle for any less than that, it has to be the target.”
In other Rangers transfer news, a new arrival is heading in from Premier League giants and is set to make his debut in Sunday’s league opener against Motherwell.
