Injury expert fears Sarr may have suffered knee ligament injury after analysing Watford footage

Watford star Ismaila Sarr may have suffered damage to his medial collateral ligament against Man United last Saturday (20 November).

So says injury expert Ben Dinnery, who runs the Premier Injuries site and has a background in medicine and data analysis.

Sarr, who scored the Hornets’ second in a dramatic 4-1 win, was taken off with 20 minutes to play after a robust challenge from Donny van de Beek.

As per Herts Live after the match, Watford’s Claudio Ranieri said: “I don’t know if it was the knee. In the next days, the doctor will see everything.”

Dinnery claims footage of the incident and the manager’s comments suggest the Senegalese winger may have injured his MCL.

He told Football Insider correspondent Adam Williams: “Ranieri played it down, but the caveat was that he hadn’t yet been assessed.

“If we take that on face value, we can maybe assume it’s a bit of an impact injury, nothing too sinister.

“I’ve seen the footage and there may be some involvement with the MCL, just from the way his knee buckled after that tackled.

“You would hope that there is nothing more significant going on. If it is MCL, we can expect to see Sarr back on the pitch sooner rather than later.

“It didn’t look great initially and he was in quite a bit of discomfort. But it’s hard to set too much stall by a manager’s post-match comments.”

Sarr is Watford’s top scorer in 2021-22 with five goals in 12 appearances.

He will travel to the Africa Cup of Nations in January with Senegal, who were beaten finalists in 2019.
