Watkins and Aston Villa teammate set to benefit after 'best-ever' signing agreed - Agbonlahor

Philippe Coutinho may be the best signing in Aston Villa history, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Aston Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer claimed Coutinho suits Steven Gerrard’s system “perfectly” and will want to do well for his ex-Liverpool teammate.

The club confirmed the signing of the Brazilian on loan from Barcelona last Friday (7 January).

He was then officially unveiled as an Aston Villa player on Tuesday (11 January) after completing a medical and signing a contract.

The Midlands giants have an option to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

“I think he’s Aston Villa’s best-ever signing, to be honest,” Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

“Obviously we can’t get too carried away, we’ve got to see how he performs.

“Coutinho’s 29 now, he should be at his peak as a player. I’m excited.

“He’s going to want to do well for his ex-teammate Steven Gerrard. I’m sure Gerrard will get the best out of him.

“The club have invested a lot of money in wages.

“I think he’ll play in one of the wide number-10 positions, him and Emi Buendia behind Ollie Watkins. That is something to really look forward to. Watkins would love the service from Coutinho.

“It’s exciting. It shows any Villa player who is not bang at it, they will be replaced. Gerrard is not here to make friends, he’s here to get as high as in the league as possible.

“It suits the formation he plays. Coutinho comes straight on, on the left side and Buendia on the right. They both fit in perfectly.”

In other news, Aston Villa have agreed a third January signing.
