Wayne Rooney controversy at Plymouth Argyle: ‘Major updates emerge’

Wayne Rooney was never supposed to be at a Plymouth Argyle event he has come under fire for missing, journalist Daniel Orme has reported.

The 39-year-old left Pilgrims fans furious when he was absent from a Christmas celebration with the club on Tuesday (17 December).

After an email was issued to supporters telling them Rooney was unable to attend, pictures then emerged that night of him and his wife Coleen at a Christmas Market in Manchester, which did not help the mood.

However, in this latest update it has been revealed that the former Man United and England striker had never been scheduled to attend the event at Plymouth, with the email sent out to make that clear.

It is also pointed out that the photo of Rooney and his wife was from the night before, and that he had taken first-team training on the day of the event in question as normal.

This may ease the situation for the 39-year-old to some extent, given it now appears he has not misled supporters by not attending the event.

Even so, with Plymouth in the bottom three in the Championship and their struggles already leading to questions about Rooney’s position at the club, he is still going to be under a lot of pressure.

Indeed negative news often gains a lot more traction than updates that clear the air, and so it is possible not everyone who saw the original claims aimed at him will also be aware of this clarification.

That may mean he’s still not be in the good books of every fan of the club when it comes to this particular situation.

So given the need for results at Argyle if they are to get out of trouble, this confusion may only add to the frustration he faces from the fanbase if things do not improve on the pitch quickly.

It therefore seems that with the sending of the email and posting of the picture Rooney has found himself at the eye of an unwanted and unnecessary storm due to events out of his control.
