Wayne Rooney major update: ‘Why Plymouth Argyle players wanted manager sacked’
Wayne Rooney’s sacking by Plymouth Argyle was wanted by some of the club’s players, according to The Athletic.
Having taken over at Home Park in the summer, the former Man United and England striker departed on Tuesday (31 December).
He left the Pilgrims bottom of the Championship table, four points from safety and having won just one of their last 14 games. It therefore seems as though not all of the squad will have been sad to see him go.
As per this update, a number of Plymouth players were “eager for a change” due to a sense Rooney was not doing enough to change what was happening, or improve their defensive record away from home.
Another source close to the dressing room apparently questioned the direction the club were going in under the 39-year-old’s management.
Plymouth dressing room review does not bode well for Wayne Rooney
Football Insider Opinion
After damaging spells in charge of DC United and Derby County, Rooney will have seen his appointment at Home Park as a chance to get his managerial career back on track.
But a dismal run in which he never really seemed to win over the Plymouth fans or get the club going in the right direction is not going to help his future prospects.
Indeed, this review will surely make other clubs wary of appointing him after suggestions he was not doing enough to address some big issues for his team.

Under him, they conceded six goals at Norwich, five at Cardiff, and four at Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol City and Coventry respectively.
The fact he was therefore not seen to be addressing those issues at Plymouth likely means other clubs are not going to trust him to solve their own problems either.
This has come despite the board seemingly being keen to back him in January, and it is hard to see too many more clubs being ready to take such a gamble on Rooney the manager.
In other news, Rangers are lining up a January bid for a Plymouth Argyle player.
