Wayne Rooney sack: ‘Huge Plymouth Argyle update’
Wayne Rooney is “fighting to save his job” at Plymouth after the heavy 4-0 loss to Bristol City, The Guardian reports.
According to the outlet’s website on 1 December, the Manchester United legend is under “heightened scrutiny” following a “hugely damaging” week of results.
Rooney insisted that fans have every right to be angry and hit out at his players after the match. He claimed they need to show a bit of “grit and determination” as they are now winless in four, putting pressure on the 39-year-old who has already been tipped to face the sack by Christmas.
Simon Hallet, the Plymouth chairman, was present at Ashton Gate to watch another big defeat. This comes after a thrashing 6-1 defeat at Norwich in midweek, and they now sit 21st in the Championship.

Football Insider opinion
Rooney has once again come under pressure in a Championship job. Earlier this year, he left Birmingham City in disappointing fashion after just 83 days in charge.
However, the Pilgrims have not been languishing at the bottom of the table all season. Their recent form has been mixed, with one win, two draws, and three losses this month.

Despite this, Rooney urgently needs to address Plymouth’s defensive frailties. They have the worst defensive record in the league, conceding 38 goals. If they are to stand any chance of survival, they must tighten up at the back. Meanwhile, they’ll also need to fend off interest for Morgan Whittaker, who has caught the eye of Rangers.
Their away form is also a glaring issue, as they’re still winless on the road all season. Their league form hasn’t been pretty, with one win in nine, but it would be damning to have Rooney sacked already, as a chance at survival still looks open.
Adding to the pressure is the club’s involvement in a behind-the-scenes ‘Wrexham-style’ documentary, which could be adding further scrutiny on both the players and Rooney. He insists that this won’t be a distraction to the club, but all will be revealed when it gets released.
