Wayne Rooney sack: Major update as ‘Plymouth Argyle talks’ confirmed

Wayne Rooney has confirmed talks at Plymouth Argyle in an apparent hint that he will be given time to turn things around.

Having taken charge of the Pilgrims in the summer the former Man United and England striker has endured a tough start to life at Home Park.

His side have won just one of their last ten games, losing six, with many fans calling for the 39-year-old to be sacked after their 2-1 defeat to Swansea on Tuesday (10 December).

Indeed, there have been suggestions that Rooney has just two games to save his job at Plymouth, although that may not be the case now.

Speaking to the media, via BBC Sport, the Pilgrims boss revealed that he has held “honest conversations” with the club’s board about potential signings for the January transfer window.

He said: “These are all conversations that are going on so come January we are in the best possible position we can be to get what we need.

“Getting the injured players back will be like new signings for us.

“We’re under no illusions we need to improve the squad, that’s there for everyone to see, and we’re working extremely hard to put ourselves in the best position to do that as early as possible.”

That may suggest he will be given past the turn of the year to rectify the situation, and there are still four games they have to play between now and the end of 2024.

In some ways those in charge at Home Park may feel it is worth giving Rooney the chance to turn things around at the club.

They have just appointed Mike Phelan as the 39-year-old’s assistant, meaning he now has someone he knows well from his time at Man United alongside him.

Plymouth may therefore want to give that linkup time to deliver on its potential, rather than sacking Rooney straight after which would raise questions about why they bothered with Phelan’s appointment.

There is though a gamble attached with that given the Pilgrims are already in the relegation zone in the Championship table.

If Rooney and Phelan cannot improve results quickly, there is a risk that the club will be cut adrift towards the foot of the table with games running out for any potential replacement to get them out of trouble.

As a result this revelation about the January transfer from their manager may actually increase the nerves among a number of Plymouth Argyle supporters.
