Wayne Rooney shares dramatic response to female ‘video circulating online’

Wayne Rooney has taken to social media to dramatically address footage that appeared online while in charge of Championship side Plymouth.

Plymouth have ended weeks of speculation by announcing the mutual termination of Rooney, 39, capping off a tough start to the week for the former England international.

The South Coast side were well beaten 2-0 by fellow strugglers Oxford United on Sunday (December 29) in their last game of 2024, thanks to goals from Ciaron Brown and Przemyslaw Placheta.

Rooney leaves the club having failed to record a win in their last nine league games, sitting at the bottom of the Championship table with just 18 points from their 23 games.

Wayne Rooney addresses rumours regarding his private life while in charge at Plymouth

The news of Rooney’s dismissal comes after a clip surfaced online showing what appeared to be Rooney letting an unidentified woman into his Devon flat, sparking rumours about his relationship with his wife Coleen.

The former England international appears to be wearing a grey tracksuit, unlocking the door to allow the mystery woman inside.

Rooney has since taken to Instagram to address the rumours, saying: “I am aware of a video circulating online. The video shows a man and woman looking around my apartment. The couple kindly gave me a lift home and were in there at the same time as my son who was visiting.

“Footage is from last summer. It is annoying that at least one online newspaper has chosen to edit the footage to make it appear as though a woman entered the apartment on her own. That is simply not true.”

Rooney’s departure from Plymouth is another major blow to his managerial aspirations following a dismal spell in charge of Birmingham last season, who were ultimately relegated from the Championship.

First-team coach Kevin Nancekivell and captain Joe Edwards will lead the team for their Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day (January 1).
