Wayne Rooney to Everton: Alan Myers responds to David Moyes staff rumours

Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers has responded to suggestions that Wayne Rooney will be returning to Everton to join David Moyes’ backroom staff.

It was confirmed on Saturday (11 January) that the 61-year-old has returned to the Toffees as manager after 11 years away, replacing the sacked Sean Dyche.

Rooney meanwhile is out of work after leaving his role as manager of Championship side Plymouth Argyle on New Year’s Eve.

There have been some recent suggestions that the ex-Man United and England striker could return to his boyhood club Everton as assistant to Moyes, who gave him his senior debut.

Myers though appears to have played down suggestions of that happening as things stand.

Responding to a question on social media from one fan about if there was any truth in rumours Rooney could soon be back with the Toffees as part of the backroom staff, the reporter simply said: “I’ve not heard that.”

Wayne Rooney could be tempted by return to Everton

Football Insider Opinion

While it remains to be seen if he will get the chance to do so there is a good chance Rooney would be tempted by a role such as this.

A return to Everton with the manager who first gave him an opportunity in senior football would be a rather romantic one for the 39-year-old, especially as the club leave Goodison Park this summer.

It would also allow him to remain in the coaching game, being an assistant may give him a nice spell out of the firing line after what he has endured recently with the likes of Birmingham and Plymouth.

Working with a manager such as Moyes could also give him the chance to learn some things that might help him further down the line in his own managerial career.

With Everton struggling for goals this season, having someone with Rooney’s scoring record to work with their attackers might be appealing for the club as well.

As a result, this might be something that is at the very least worth considering for both parties, if it has indeed not been already.
