‘Wayne Rooney’s managerial career is finished’ as he ‘joins Roy Keane & Neville’

Plymouth Argyle fans believe that Wayne Rooney’s entire managerial career is “finished” after it was confirmed that he has left the club by mutual consent.

The 39-year-old joined the club in May of 2024 but was unable to make it into 2025 after a poor run of form, with Mike Phelan and Simon Ireland leaving the Pilgrims as well.

Plymouth stated, “We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

Rooney added his thanks to the club while stating, “To the Green Army, thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever.”

Rooney leaves the club bottom of the Championship after being in charge for just 23 fixtures, with Plymouth winning only four league matches during that time.

The Pilgrims were booed off the pitch following their 2-0 loss against Oxford United on Sunday (29 December), with supporters having turned on Rooney.

Plymouth could be Wayne Rooney’s final managerial job

Rooney embarked on his managerial career after retiring from his playing career, having since taken on jobs with Derby County, DC United, Birmingham City, and most recently Plymouth.

The former England international boasts a 25.3 percent win percentage after managing 178 games across his professional career.

That has led to fans making it clear that Rooney should “call it a day” in regards to management, adding that the situation is “becoming embarrassing.”
